How to Strangler Fig an Organization

Twenty years ago, our organization struggled with inefficiencies: a cumbersome, self developed, source code and softare configuration managment system, rigid architecture, a culture resistant to change, and lengthy lead and cycle times. Manual testing and prolonged build processes further compounded our challenges. This talk details our transformative journey from stagnation to agility.

We began by automating builds, increasing buildable projects and creating a custom dashboard for developers. Transitioning to a new development environment, we adopted methods for professional reviews, overcoming regulatory and internal resistance.

Focusing on high-impact areas like automated testing, continuous integration and reviews, we reduced manual effort and improved reliability. Scaling our successes globally, we tackled organizational politics and cultural inertia, fostering a culture that embraces change.

Streamlining processes, we ensured every developer activity added value. Implementing a modern softwaredevelopment ecosystem, we established robust CI/CD pipelines and automated dependency managemen
